1. Check the Simple Things First

4. No Display Doesn't Always Mean HDMI

This is where PS5 diagnosis becomes more complicated.

For the PS5 to display an image, the motherboard must successfully complete a sequence of startup events.

Important power rails and control signals need to appear in the correct order.

If the startup process stops before the APU and other required circuits initialise correctly, the console may never reach the stage where it can produce video.

The result to the customer can look exactly like an HDMI problem:

PS5 powers on → TV says No Signal.

But the actual problem may be somewhere else on the motherboard.

5. Standby Power Problems

Before the PS5 fully starts, several standby power supplies need to operate correctly.

Technicians may check important voltage stages such as:

  • 12V main supply
  • 5V standby supply
  • 3.3V standby
  • 1.8V standby
  • Other secondary standby rails

If one of these supplies is missing or unstable, the console may not complete its normal startup sequence.

This is why simply replacing an HDMI port based on the symptom can sometimes waste both time and money.

6. Southbridge and Startup Problems

The Southbridge is another important part of the PS5 startup process.

It and its surrounding power and control circuits need to initialise before later stages of the console's startup can proceed normally.

If this process fails, downstream power signals may never appear.

The console can therefore appear to have an HDMI, RAM or APU problem when the actual fault occurred earlier in the startup sequence.

7. GDDR6 or APU Power Problems

The PS5's APU and GDDR6 memory require multiple power supplies during startup.

A motherboard fault can cause one of these supplies to:

never start, start at the wrong voltage, or appear briefly and then shut down.

This is an important distinction.

If a voltage appears for only a fraction of a second before disappearing, a standard multimeter may not tell the whole story.

For advanced motherboard diagnosis, an oscilloscope can be used to observe what happens immediately after the power button is pressed.

8. Why Proper Diagnosis Matters

Imagine several power rails disappear when the PS5 shuts down.

That doesn't necessarily mean all of those circuits are faulty.

The console may have deliberately disabled them because an earlier stage failed.

A better diagnostic question is:

What was the last stage that started correctly, and what was the first stage that failed?

This approach can help narrow the problem to the actual area of the motherboard rather than replacing components based only on symptoms.

9. PS5 Turns On and Then Shuts Off

Power-sequence diagnosis is also useful when a PS5:

  • Turns on and immediately turns off
  • Beeps but doesn't fully start
  • Shows a blue light but no display
  • Starts briefly and shuts down
  • Has no HDMI output despite an undamaged port
