PS5 Turns On But No Display? It May Not Be an HDMI Problem

Your PlayStation 5 turns on, but there is no picture on the TV.

The first thought is often:

“The HDMI port must be broken.”

While a damaged HDMI port is certainly a common cause of PS5 display problems, it isn't the only possibility.

A PS5 can power on but produce no display because of problems with the HDMI circuit, power sequence, motherboard, Southbridge, GDDR6 memory power or APU startup.

At Tech Tunnel, we diagnose PS5 faults before replacing parts unnecessarily.

1. Check the Simple Things First

Before assuming the console needs repair, try some basic checks:

  • Try another HDMI cable.
  • Try another HDMI input on the TV.
  • Test the PS5 on another TV or monitor.
  • Inspect the PS5 HDMI port for visible damage.
  • Check whether the HDMI cable feels unusually loose.
  • Restart the console and TV.

If the PS5 still turns on without producing an image, the fault may require further diagnosis.

2. A Damaged HDMI Port

The HDMI port is one of the first areas we inspect when a PS5 has no display.

  • The port can be damaged when:
  • The console is dropped while the HDMI cable is connected.
  • The cable is pulled sideways.
  • The HDMI plug is repeatedly inserted at an angle.
  • The console is moved without disconnecting the cable.
  • Pins inside the HDMI port become bent or damaged.
  • A damaged port may cause:
  • No display
  • Intermittent display
  • Flickering
  • Loss of signal when the cable moves
  • A loose HDMI connection

However, if the HDMI port looks normal, don't immediately assume replacing it will fix the console.

3. The HDMI Circuit Can Fail

The physical HDMI socket is only one part of the PS5's video-output system.

There are electronic components on the motherboard responsible for processing and protecting the HDMI signals.

Therefore, a PS5 can have a perfectly good-looking HDMI port and still have no video output.

Professional diagnosis may involve checking the HDMI port, HDMI circuitry and surrounding components.

4. No Display Doesn't Always Mean HDMI

This is where PS5 diagnosis becomes more complicated.

For the PS5 to display an image, the motherboard must successfully complete a sequence of startup events.

Important power rails and control signals need to appear in the correct order.

If the startup process stops before the APU and other required circuits initialise correctly, the console may never reach the stage where it can produce video.

The result to the customer can look exactly like an HDMI problem:

PS5 powers on → TV says No Signal.

But the actual problem may be somewhere else on the motherboard.

5. Standby Power Problems

Before the PS5 fully starts, several standby power supplies need to operate correctly.

Technicians may check important voltage stages such as:

  • 12V main supply
  • 5V standby supply
  • 3.3V standby
  • 1.8V standby
  • Other secondary standby rails

If one of these supplies is missing or unstable, the console may not complete its normal startup sequence.

This is why simply replacing an HDMI port based on the symptom can sometimes waste both time and money.

6. Southbridge and Startup Problems

The Southbridge is another important part of the PS5 startup process.

It and its surrounding power and control circuits need to initialise before later stages of the console's startup can proceed normally.

If this process fails, downstream power signals may never appear.

The console can therefore appear to have an HDMI, RAM or APU problem when the actual fault occurred earlier in the startup sequence.

7. GDDR6 or APU Power Problems

The PS5's APU and GDDR6 memory require multiple power supplies during startup.

A motherboard fault can cause one of these supplies to:

never start, start at the wrong voltage, or appear briefly and then shut down.

This is an important distinction.

If a voltage appears for only a fraction of a second before disappearing, a standard multimeter may not tell the whole story.

For advanced motherboard diagnosis, an oscilloscope can be used to observe what happens immediately after the power button is pressed.

8. Why Proper Diagnosis Matters

Imagine several power rails disappear when the PS5 shuts down.

That doesn't necessarily mean all of those circuits are faulty.

The console may have deliberately disabled them because an earlier stage failed.

A better diagnostic question is:

What was the last stage that started correctly, and what was the first stage that failed?

This approach can help narrow the problem to the actual area of the motherboard rather than replacing components based only on symptoms.

9. PS5 Turns On and Then Shuts Off

Power-sequence diagnosis is also useful when a PS5:

  • Turns on and immediately turns off
  • Beeps but doesn't fully start
  • Shows a blue light but no display
  • Starts briefly and shuts down
  • Has no HDMI output despite an undamaged port

These symptoms can sometimes indicate a deeper motherboard or power-related fault.

10. Can a PS5 Motherboard Be Repaired?

Depending on the fault, yes.

Some motherboard problems can be repaired at component level rather than replacing the entire console.

The important part is identifying the actual cause first.

Possible repair areas can include:

  • HDMI port
  • HDMI circuitry
  • Power supply circuits
  • Damaged motherboard components
  • Short circuits
  • Power-sequence faults
  • Other board-level problems

Whether a repair is economical depends on the fault and extent of the damage.

PS5 Repair in Hamilton

If your PS5 turns on but has no display, don't automatically assume you need a new console.

Tech Tunnel provides PS5 diagnostic and repair services in Hamilton, New Zealand.

We can inspect the console and determine whether the problem is related to the HDMI port, HDMI circuitry, power system or another motherboard fault.

Need Your PS5 Checked?

Bring your console to Tech Tunnel for assessment.

If possible, tell us exactly what happened before the problem started—for example, whether the PS5 was dropped, the HDMI cable was pulled, the console suddenly shut down, or the problem appeared without any physical damage.

That information can help with diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my PS5 turn on but show no signal?

A damaged HDMI port or HDMI circuit can cause no signal, but motherboard startup, power, APU or GDDR6-related problems can potentially produce similar symptoms.

Does no display mean my PS5 HDMI port is broken?

No. The HDMI port is an important area to check, but no display is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. Other motherboard faults can also prevent the PS5 from producing video.

Can you repair a PS5 HDMI port?

A physically damaged HDMI port can often be replaced if the motherboard itself has not suffered excessive damage. The surrounding HDMI circuitry should also be checked when necessary.

Why does my PS5 turn on and then turn off?

This can have several causes, including power-related or motherboard faults. Proper diagnosis is required to determine where the startup process is failing.

Is PS5 motherboard repair possible?

Many board-level faults can potentially be repaired, depending on the damaged component and condition of the motherboard.
